Beth Orton – ‘The Ground Above’ album review: Out of the desert and into the garden
The ninth studio LP from one of the UK’s finest voices.
Electronic music is a broad genre encompassing music created primarily through electronic instruments, synthesisers, drum machines, samplers and computer-based production.
Emerging from experimental electronic composition during the early 20th century, the genre developed into a global cultural force through styles including techno, house, ambient, trance, drum and bass, electro and EDM. Pioneering artists such as Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder and Yellow Magic Orchestra laid the foundations for modern electronic music, while later acts including Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin and Underworld expanded its commercial and artistic reach. Today, electronic music influences virtually every area of popular music, from pop and hip hop to film scores and experimental sound art, making it one of the most diverse and innovative genres in contemporary music.
