“You might get your ass kicked”: the club Miles Davis called a proving ground for great musicians
Seminal teachings.

Thelonious Monk was an American jazz pianist, composer and bandleader whose groundbreaking approach to harmony, rhythm and improvisation made him one of the most influential figures in jazz history. A pioneer of bebop alongside Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Bud Powell, Monk developed a highly distinctive piano style characterised by dissonant harmonies, angular melodies and percussive playing. His compositions, including ‘Round Midnight’, ‘Straight, No Chaser’, ‘Blue Monk’, ‘Well, You Needn’t’ and ‘Epistrophy’, have become enduring jazz standards performed by generations of musicians. Regarded as one of the greatest composers in American music, Monk’s innovative work reshaped modern jazz and continues to influence artists across countless genres.
