Throbbing Gristle were an English industrial music band formed in London in 1975 by Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson. Emerging from the avant-garde performance art collective COUM Transmissions, the group pioneered industrial music through their confrontational blend of electronic experimentation, noise, tape manipulation and provocative imagery. Their uncompromising approach challenged conventional ideas of music and performance, influencing genres including industrial, electronic, noise, post-punk and experimental rock. Although they initially disbanded in 1981 before reforming in 2004, Throbbing Gristle remain one of the most innovative and influential acts in alternative music history.
