Drive, defiance and the dole: Huw Bunford on the secrets to Super Furry Animals’ 30 years in music
A celebration of Wales’ most important cult band.

Super Furry Animals are a Welsh rock band formed in Cardiff in 1993 by Gruff Rhys, Huw Bunford, Guto Pryce, Cian Ciarán and Dafydd Ieuan. Widely regarded as one of the most inventive and adventurous British bands of the post-Britpop era, they blend psychedelic rock, indie rock, electronic music, power pop and experimental influences into a distinctive sound. Emerging through the Welsh-language music scene before signing to Creation Records, the band released acclaimed albums including ‘Fuzzy Logic’, ‘Radiator’, ‘Guerrilla’, ‘Rings Around the World’ and ‘Phantom Power’. Renowned for their surreal humour, ambitious production and willingness to experiment, Super Furry Animals have become one of the defining alternative bands of the 1990s and 2000s.
