Shoegaze is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the United Kingdom during the late 1980s, characterised by dense layers of guitar effects, ethereal vocals and immersive soundscapes. The name originated from critics observing musicians who appeared to spend performances looking down at their effects pedals, as though they were gazing at their shoes. Influenced by dream pop, noise rock and psychedelic music, shoegaze was pioneered by bands including My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride and Lush.

Although its mainstream popularity declined during the rise of Britpop in the mid-1990s, the genre experienced a major revival in the 21st century, influencing countless contemporary indie, alternative and post-rock artists. Shoegaze remains celebrated for its atmospheric textures, emotional depth and innovative approach to guitar music.
