Pixies – ‘Complete B-Sides 1988-97’ album review: Alt-rock off-cuts repackaged for 2026
A banal archive…

Pixies are an American alternative rock band whose innovative blend of punk, surf rock and surreal songwriting helped shape the sound of alternative music during the late 1980s and 1990s. Formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986, the group became renowned for Black Francis’ cryptic lyrics, Joey Santiago’s angular guitar work, Kim Deal’s melodic basslines and David Lovering’s dynamic drumming.
Although Pixies achieved only modest commercial success during their original run, albums such as ‘Surfer Rosa’ and ‘Doolittle’ proved hugely influential on later artists including Nirvana, Radiohead and Weezer. Following their initial split in 1993, the band reunited in 2004 and have continued to record and tour, remaining one of alternative rock’s most celebrated and influential acts.
