Minor Threat were an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, DC, in 1980. Despite existing for just three years, the group became one of the most influential bands in punk history, helping define the hardcore movement through their fast, aggressive sound and uncompromising DIY ethos. Led by vocalist Ian MacKaye, Minor Threat released a series of landmark EPs and their only studio album, inspiring countless punk and alternative bands. They are also closely associated with the straight edge movement, which emerged from their song ‘Straight Edge’, although MacKaye later clarified that it was intended as a personal statement rather than the foundation of a movement.
