Joan Baez is an American singer, songwriter, musician and activist whose distinctive soprano voice and lifelong commitment to social justice made her one of the defining figures of the 1960s folk revival. Emerging from the coffeehouse scene at the end of the 1950s, Baez popularised traditional folk songs while championing contemporary songwriters including Bob Dylan, whose career she helped introduce to wider audiences. Throughout her career, she has combined music with activism, campaigning for civil rights, non-violence, environmental causes and human rights. Albums such as ‘Joan Baez’, ‘Diamonds & Rust’ and ‘Farewell, Angelina’ established her as one of folk music’s most influential performers. Her enduring artistic and humanitarian legacy has earned numerous honours, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
It will take place in Maryland on October 3rd.
