Brian Cox was born in Dundee, Scotland, to Mary Ann Guillerline McCann Cox, a jute mill worker, and Charles McArdle Campbell Cox, a police officer and shopkeeper. His father died when Cox was eight years old, and he was largely raised by his older sisters. Cox was previously married to Caroline Burt and has two children from that marriage. Since 2002, he has been married to German actor Nicole Ansari-Cox, and they have two sons together.
