The Stone Roses’ John Squire unveils touching new artwork in tribute to Mani
The Stone Roses guitarist John Squire has paid a touching tribute to his late bandmate Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield with a piece of new artwork.
The Manchester musical icon died at his home in Heaton Moor, Greater Manchester, on November 20th, aged 63.
Earlier this week, it was confirmed by Mounfield’s family that he died peacefully in his sleep due to respiratory issues that the long-standing lung condition, emphysema, had caused.
It was also reported by the Manchester Evening News that Mounfield was not taken to the hospital due to being pronounced dead at the scene, and police did not attend his home, as it was categorised as a non-suspicious death.
While the music world was united in their grief for the bassist, Ian Brown was the only member of The Stone Roses to mourn publically on social media in the immediate aftermath of his death. Now, Squire has shared an image of a new artwork that he’s made in tribute to his late friend.
The piece, which is in Squire’s signature style, is a multi-coloured jigsaw-style artwork that features letters of Mani’s name written on individual squares.
In addition to being the band’s guitarist, Squire also created the Jackson Pollock-inspired artwork for their seminal 1989 debut album and has also held exhibitions for his art.
Other powerful tributes to Mani include Oasis dedicating ‘Live Forever’ to their fellow Mancunian music legend at their concert in São Paulo on November 22nd.
Additionally, the official account for The Stone Roses led the tributes on social media, writing, “RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for. X”.
An invite-only memorial service is set to be held at Manchester Cathedral on December 22nd, which would be followed by a private committal service.
Mani is survived by two children that he shared with his wife, Imelda, who tragically died in 2023 due to bowel cancer.
