The Stone Roses’ Mani to have memorial service held at Manchester Cathedral
Gary ‘Mani‘ Mounfield, the late Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist, is set to have a memorial service at Manchester Cathedral.
On November 20th, the 63-year-old icon’s death was announced by his brother, Greg, who wrote on Facebook, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary Mani Mounfield. RIP RKID.”
Now, Greg has shared a further update on social media. He revealed: “On Monday December 22nd a service for Mani will be held in Manchester Cathedral Victoria Street, Manchester M3 1SX at 11:30am.”
The announcement also noted that a private committal service would follow the celebration of his life at Manchester Cathedral.
In the update, Greg also said that his brother “passed away peacefully at his home in Heaton Moor” on November 20th, and described him as a “beloved husband to the late Imelda [and] the much loved father to George, Gene and Joe”, as well as “a loved son-in-law, nephew, cousin and good friend to many.”
No cause of death has been revealed.
Tragically, in 2023, Mounfield’s wife, Imelda, with whom he shared two children, died following a lengthy battle with bowel cancer.
Before her passing, the bassist said to ITV News, “Walking on stage at Wembley Stadium in front of 90 thousand people is a doddle compared to this. It’s made me so appreciative of the NHS for what they do and it’s made me re-evaluate everything. All these gigs, all these records, they don’t mean a thing.”
Following the sad news of Mani’s passing, the music world came together to honour his vast legacy with the official account for The Stone Roses leading the tributes on social media, writing, “RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for. X”.
Meanwhile, Liam Gallagher wrote on X, “In total shock and absolutely devastated on hearing the news about Mani my hero RIP RKID LG.”
Additionally, Oasis dedicated ‘Live Forever’ to their fellow Mancunian music legend at their concert in São Paulo on November 22nd.
