The Smashing Pumpkins announce new album ‘Aghori Mhori Mei’
Grunge heroes The Smashing Pumpkins have announced details of their new album, Aghori Mhori Mei, marking their 13th full-length studio release.
While bands typically unveil albums many months before the release is scheduled to hit shelves and arrive on streaming platforms, that’s not the way that The Smashing Pumpkins roll. Instead of putting fans through an agonising wait and drip-feeding singles at an irritatingly slow speed, Aghori Mhori Mei will be available to be heard in full from August 2nd.
So far, it’s been a summer to remember for The Smashing Pumpkins, who recently concluded a successful arena tour across the United Kingdom with Weezer. They also played various dates on the continent with Green Day, and are set to start the North America leg of the tour on July 29th in Washington.
It’s only been twelve months since the last Smashing Pumpkins album, and frontman Billy Corgan is evidently on a prolific writing streak of late. Despite having his own wrestling federation, and a reality television show, music remains his first love, and the quick turnaround while making Aghori Mhori Mei shows its still his main focus.
“In the writing of this new album I became intrigued with the well-worn axiom, ‘you can’t go home again’,” Corgan remarked of the forthcoming release.
The singer continued: “Which I have found personally to be true in form but thought well, what if we tried anyway? Not so much in looking backwards with sentimentality but rather as a means to move forward; to see if in the balance of success and failure that our ways of making music circa 1990-1996 would still inspire something revelatory.”
The upcoming release from The Smashing Pumpkins marks their first album since they revealed Kiki Wong as their new guitarist after encouraging the public to audition for the role. However, it remains unclear whether Wong played on Aghori Mhori Mei.
Wong was one of 10,000 applicants for the role, and after she was successful, Corgan said of her immense talent, “I was a fan of Kiki’s before she submitted her name to be considered – and it’s great that someone of her acumen will be part of our touring family. I can’t wait to hit the road with Kiki as part of our mad circus. It’s definitely an exciting moment for The Smashing Pumpkins to be this busy with touring in 2024. We’ll see you all this summer!”
