The Smashing Pumpkins reveal new guitarist after 10,000 applied for role

The Smashing Pumpkins have revealed Kiki Wong as their new guitarist after encouraging the public to audition for the role.

In January, the Billy Corgan-fronted rock back told followers on social media they were looking for a replacement for Jeff Schroeder, and listed an email address for those interested to contact. Schroeder previously served with The Smashing Pumpkins for 15 years.

While this approach is unconventional, The Smashing Pumpkins were flooded with possible candidates and over 10,000 got in touch via email. Corgan took on the task of reviewing the applicants before creating a shortlist and inviting the contenders to an in-person audition in Los Angeles last month before deciding upon Wong.

The latest guitarist for The Smashing Pumpkins has impressive credentials, performing with celebrated names such as Taylor Swift, Usher and Bret Michaels. Wong is also a member of the rock band Vigil of War, which she’ll now balance alongside her duties with The Smashing Pumpkins.

Discussing the extensive process, Corgan said: “Reviewing the work of these incredible musicians was a herculean, albeit worthy effort. First off, I really want to thank everyone who submitted materials for consideration. It wasn’t an easy decision with how much great guitar playing we were lucky enough to hear and see over the past few months.”

The singer continued: “I was a fan of Kiki’s before she submitted her name to be considered – and it’s great that someone of her acumen will be part of our touring family. I can’t wait to hit the road with Kiki as part of our mad circus. It’s definitely an exciting moment for The Smashing Pumpkins to be this busy with touring in 2024. We’ll see you all this summer!”

For Wong, this is an opportunity for which she’s incredibly grateful because of her adoration for the group that soundtracked her teenage years. “It’s been an absolute wild ride, but I am beyond honored and humbled to be chosen to perform alongside some of rock’s greatest and most influential musicians of all time .I never thought little ole 15-year-old me playing metal guitar in my bedroom would amount to this moment,” she remarked.

Wong continued: “It goes to show hard work and perseverance truly pays off if you’re willing to push through the tough stuff, so never lose hope out there. I am so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to share the stage with The legendary Smashing Pumpkins!”

Her first performance with The Smashing Pumpkins is set to take place in June at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The group are set to tour Britain with Weezer, before playing a series of dates with Interpol and Tom Morello across Europe. They will then return to North America for a set of stadium shows with Green Day.
