Before becoming The Band, the group spent several years backing Ronnie Hawkins as The Hawks before joining Bob Dylan for his influential electric tours of 1965 and 1966. ### Their farewell concert, 'The Last Waltz', held on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, was filmed by Martin Scorsese and is widely regarded as one of the greatest concert films ever made. ### Although Robbie Robertson wrote many of the group's best-known songs, several members shared lead vocal duties, giving The Band one of rock's most distinctive collective voices.
