“Ugly music”: The 1993 PJ Harvey album that scared her band
“Makes me squirm”.

Steve Albini was an American musician, recording engineer, producer and music journalist whose uncompromising philosophy and distinctive recording techniques made him one of the most influential figures in alternative rock.
Best known as the frontman of Big Black and Shellac, Albini also recorded seminal albums for artists including Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Slint and the Breeders. Rejecting the title of “producer” in favour of “recording engineer”, he championed an honest, analogue approach that captured bands performing live with minimal studio manipulation.
His work helped define the sound of independent rock from the 1980s onwards. Beyond music, Albini was an accomplished professional poker player and an outspoken advocate for artists’ rights. He died in 2024, leaving a profound legacy across underground and mainstream music.
The baseball allegiance is weirdly consistent.
Steve Albini’s entire original mix is available for the first time.
As dry as you could get.
“It seemed really depressing to me.”
The iconic producer died last year and the proceeds will go to his estate.
