Ian Curtis was an English musician, singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist of Joy Division. Renowned for his haunting baritone voice, introspective lyrics and intense stage presence, Curtis became one of the defining figures of post-punk despite a career that lasted only a few years. His songwriting explored themes of alienation, mental illness, love and existential despair, helping shape landmark albums such as ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’.
