I write this introduction in a box living room which, at this moment in time, doubles up as a sauna. As the UK has its hottest June on record, we are reminded of two things.
First, climate change is real, and second, buy fans in winter when the prices are low. Right now, I have one directly on me, and another circling the room, but it’s still not enough. Sweat drips from my brow as I curse the sun I have previously longed for.
It’s in moments like this we must spare a thought for the businesses that miss out in such trying times. Following an announcement by the government to avoid public transport unless absolutely essential, bus drivers and train conductors wander up and down empty carriages, wondering where all of their regulars have gone.
Delivery drivers are working around the clock in order to ensure that local shops have enough ice lollies to keep the public satisfied. Meanwhile, the pub quiz master asks questions to an empty room as usual, as trivia lovers shun the weekly tradition in the blistering sun.
Can you blame them? It’s too hot to barely string two thoughts together, let alone remember what the capital of Uzbekistan is. Those rooms, particularly those which didn’t have air con, sat empty on nights when they’re usually packed to the rafters, and those of you who usually attend likely feel as though something has been missing from your life these past seven days.
