I’m writing this the day after England’s first World Cup game, and what was a positive result for English football fans was a devastating blow to quiz masters around the country.
In the build-up to the game, the number of local pubs that were announcing that they were cancelling their weekly quizzes so that they could show the match was truly unprecedented. Fans of the beautiful game no doubt took this news as a given; however, trivia lovers everywhere were absolutely devastated.
As I sat in the corner of the pub yesterday, watching England’s fourth goal roll in, I caught a glimpse of a lonely figure, his silhouette shaking, as this regular quiz goer clutched a paper and pen, wondering when the questions were coming. They never did. Last orders were called, the place emptied, and our big-brained friends went to bed at a loss.
