CBGB was a legendary music club in New York City’s East Village that became the birthplace of American punk rock and a cornerstone of underground music.
Opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal, the venue originally stood for Country, BlueGrass and Blues, although it soon became synonymous with punk, new wave and alternative rock. CBGB launched the careers of bands including the Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Television, Patti Smith Group and Dead Boys, helping redefine popular music before closing its doors in 2006. Today, it remains one of the most iconic live music venues in rock history.
