The 1996 gig Noel Gallagher said defined British pop music: “Everything was leading up to…”
Musical big bang.
Britpop was a British music and cultural movement that emerged in the early 1990s as a reaction against the dominance of American grunge and alternative rock. Characterised by melodic guitar music, distinctly British lyrics and influences drawn from bands such as The Beatles, The Kinks, The Smiths and David Bowie, Britpop became one of the defining movements in modern British music.
Led by bands including Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Suede and Elastica, the genre dominated UK charts and popular culture throughout the mid-1990s, culminating in the famous Blur versus Oasis chart battle of 1995.
Although its commercial peak was relatively brief, Britpop had a lasting impact on British music, fashion and identity, influencing later generations of indie rock bands.
Now’s the time to find out why.
A new storm is brewing.
An under-appreciated classic…
Careful, or your headphones might explode.
“I was making a record with David Bowie… But that only lasted 24 hours.”
