How the movie Johnny Depp made to “right the wrong” ended in disaster
A resounding failure.
American actor Armand Douglas Hammer, better known as Armie Hammer, is a divisive figure in contemporary Hollywood, appearing in some of the modern industry’s best movies whilst living out a controversial private life. Working with the likes of David Fincher, Luca Guadagnino, Guy Ritchie, Kenneth Branagh, Ben Wheatley and Clint Eastwood, Hammer has enjoyed a bountiful career since his inception into the industry in 2005.
Starting his career on the small screen, Hammer developed himself as an actor in the realm of TV, taking minor roles in Arrested Development, Veronica Mars and Desperate Housewives before his first leading role as Billy Graham in the 2008 film Billy: The Early Years. Wider recognition came two years later when he portrayed the twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in Fincher’s Mark Zuckerberg biopic, Social Network.
Following this appearance in the Oscar-winning movie, Hammer’s career took off, appearing beside Johnny Depp in the Disney adaptation of The Lone Ranger in 2013, before starring in the 2015 Guy Ritchie movie The Man from U.N.C.L.E. where he appeared with Superman himself, Henry Cavill. More success followed in 2017 when he starred in the beautiful romantic drama Call Me By Your Name with Timothée Chalamet, helping him to receive a nomination for the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.
More recently, Hammer appeared in the star-studded whodunnit Death on the Nile with a number of Hollywood icons, including Gal Gadot, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Emma Mackey, Rose Leslie, Letitia Wright, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. His appearance in the 2022 film comes amid allegations of nonconsensual BDSM and emotional abuse from multiple of his ex-partners.
Despite his obvious talent in front of the camera, Hammer’s progression as an actor has been hampered by his personal life, with the documentary House Of Hammer revealing the truth behind his troubled upbringing and more.
