Armie Hammer admits he was “a dick” but denies being a cannibal
In a new interview on The Louis Theroux Podcast, actor Armie Hammer has again denied claims he is a cannibal following leaked texts in 2021, but admitted that he was “a dick”.
During his appearance on the documentary maker’s Spotify-exclusive podcast, Hammer discussed his career grinding to a halt in 2021 after allegations were made by a woman named Effie. The Call Be Your Name star admitted being in a romantic relationship with Effie for ten months, which continued through digital communication afterwards.
Theroux read out one message from Hammer, which reads, “I am 100 percent a cannibal. Fuck, that’s scary to admit. I’ve never admitted that before. I’ve cut the heart out of a living animal before and eaten it while still warm”.
Explaining the message, Hammer told Theroux, “I think the, most important context to give these kinds of things is they are one side of a conversation. As you’ll notice, of all of the text messages that were released, the person who released them, their side was cut out of the entire conversation. It makes it look like I was just rambling to myself. I mean, if you look, there’s really no response in any of the excerpts.”
Due to Effie’s messages being removed, Hammer described the conversation that leaked as “digitally altered evidence” which he claimed “is immediately inadmissible because you have no context.”
When probed about whether he’s a cannibal, Hammer said, “You know what you have to do to actually be a cannibal? You have to actually eat human flesh. So no.”
Although, later in the conversation, Hammer admitted the way he treated people was unacceptable, stating, “I’m very quick to admit that I was selfish, and inconsiderate, and an asshole, and a cad, and I used people to make me feel better. People were sort of like my bags of dope with skin on them. You make me feel amazing, so I’m gonna throw everything into this and we’re gonna have this whirlwind romance and I’m gonna whisk you up and we’re gonna go on trips and we’re gonna do all this and then I’m gonna bring you home and I’m gonna go, thanks so much that was great, and then I’m gonna move on.”
Hammer said that he was guilty of “love bombing” people before “then dropping them off and moving on” which he calls “asshole behaviour”. He added: “Does it make me a dick? Absolutely. Like, I, I have no problem admitting that. I was a dick. That’s not illegal.”
After his future projects were cancelled in 2021, Hammer moved to the Cayman Islands where he worked as a timeshare salesman, helped manage an apartment building and as a greenskeeper at a school. However, his application for a work visa was rejected, which led to him returning to Hollywood.
In addition to launching his own podcast, he recently began acting again and finished shooting Frontier Crucible in Arizona late last year. While speaking to Theroux, Hammer said, “I’ve got offers coming in every week, basically, to the point where I’m having to turn down jobs.”
