The band's unusual name was inspired by Leonard Skinner, a high school gym teacher who enforced a strict policy against long hair. ### Just three days after releasing 'Street Survivors' in 1977, the band's chartered plane crashed in Mississippi, killing Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines and bringing the band's original era to a tragic end. ### Lynyrd Skynyrd were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 in recognition of their lasting influence on American rock music.
