Richard Ashcroft has only seen Liam Gallagher on stage during Oasis tour: “The guy has been so disciplined”
Richard Ashcroft has praised Liam Gallagher’s discipline during the ongoing Oasis reunion tour, revealing he’s only seen the frontman when he’s been on stage performing.
During the triumphant run of dates, Gallagher has been prioritising his voice, which has sounded exceptional, above all else. While on stage in Dublin at Croke Park at the weekend, he told the crowd, “I think I’m a Croke Park virgin! We haven’t played here before, have we? All I do know (is) this (is) the soberest I’ve been in Ireland since I was about four or five.”
While his brother Noel, along with the rest of the band, was present at a Dublin pub for their wrap party on August 17th, Liam was reportedly notably absent and staying away from any activity that could negatively affect his vocal performances.
Speaking to Chris Evans on Virgin Radio, Ashcroft shared, “I’ve only seen Liam on stage, and I’ve got so much respect for that because every night is an opportunity to sort of celebrate in a way, but the guy has been so disciplined on this, and I think the fans respect that, they can hear that, they can feel that. Whatever he’s doing, whatever his method is, is working, and I’ve got 100 per cent respect for him.”
“I’ve seen Noel a few times,” Ashcroft continued. “He seems to be in great spirits and in a good place, and enjoying it. I think it was quite overwhelming the first one, I think it passed a bit like a movie. It wasn’t really a gig, it was beyond a gig that first Cardiff for them, it was surreal and probably overwhelming.”
Ashcroft then said that Oasis are “playing so well” before adding, “I’m just like a fan, I don’t consider myself anything, I’m just a fan of the band, and happy for them. I’ve known these people for a long time, and it’s been a hell of a journey to get to here.”
The former Verve frontman continued to share his joy at the tour, explaining how he is particularly happy for Liam and Noel’s mum, Peggy, “on a family level” to see her two sons back on stage together after 16 years.
During an appearance on TalkSPORT on August 19th, Noel reflected on the tour so far, earnestly telling hosts Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent, “I’m completely blown away. It’s difficult to put it into words, actually. It’s kind of like every night is the crowd’s first night, do you know what I mean? So every night’s got that kind of same energy. It’s been truly amazing.”
“I’ve done stadiums before and all that, but I don’t mind telling you, my legs turned to jelly after about halfway through the second song,” he confessed of the first Cardiff show. “I could have done with going back and taking a minute, but it’s been an amazing thing.”
The Oasis tour is set to resume in Toronto on August 24th with Cage The Elephant replacing Ashcroft on the bill. However, he will later perform two further shows with them at Wembley Stadium in September.
