Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ returns to US chart thanks to the World Cup
After it became England’s World Cup anthem, Oasis classic ‘Wonderwall’ has returned to the US charts.
Following each victory at the World Cup, the England fans and players unified to sing the anthem. Although England didn’t quite go all the way, and it ended in tears, the run has sparked a renewed interest in ‘Wonderwall’ on both sides of the Atlantic.
In the United States, ‘Wonderwall’, which had not touched the Billboard Hot 100 in almost 30 years, landed at 27 on the latest chart, thanks to a 73 per cent spike in streams.
It had also been aided by a huge increase in radio play and downloads, which put ‘Wonderwall’ back in the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since it first charted in 1996.
Meanwhile, in the UK, it seemed that ‘Wonderwall’ was on track to finally be the song to knock Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s ‘Rein Me In‘ from the top spot, but then Argentina spoiled the fun and it had to settle for second place.
It may have come to an end now, and ‘Wonderwall’ is a painful reminder for many of another occasion when England fell short, but the Gallagher brothers both enjoyed the resurgence greatly while it lasted.
Earlier this month, while England were still in the tournament, Liam urged fans to keep singing ‘Wonderwall’, taking to X to write, “Let’s keep the BIBLICAL VIBRATIONS going if the the GOVERNMENTS we put in power can’t bring it then it’s down to the PEOPLE cmon ENGLAND”.
Meanwhile, Noel was also in favour of the song’s new lease of life, telling TalkSPORT, “Do you know what, I thought it was a great moment, I couldn’t actually believe what I was saying.”
“I’m staggered that Jude Bellingham knows the lyrics, but it’s one of those songs,” he added, in reference to footage of the Real Madrid star belting out the song in Texas during England’s first match against Croatia.
Maybe 2030 will be the year that ‘Wonderwall’ finally reaches top spot…
