Noel Gallagher ‘couldn’t believe’ England singing ‘Wonderwall’ at World Cup: “I’m staggered Jude Bellingham knows the lyrics”
Noel Gallagher has admitted he “couldn’t believe” England fans and players were united by singing Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ last week at the World Cup.
The special moment, which was picked up on camera, occurred on June 17th at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, following England’s triumphant 4-2 victory against Croatia.
While the win feels like a lifetime ago, and the euphoric scenes were unsurprisingly not recreated after England’s goalless draw with Ghana on June 23rd, Noel, despite not being an England fan, is still on a high from seeing his song bring people together in the US.
During an appearance on TalkSPORT on June 25th, Noel began by talking about the latest resurgence of ‘Wonderwall’ in recent weeks.
After being asked if he earned any money from the radio station playing the song in his introduction, he honestly replied that it made him “about £8.50”, before adding, “It’s being played all over the world somewhere right now, apart from North Korea.”
Notably, the song has increased by 50 per cent in streams over the past week, according to Spotify, which Liam Gallagher celebrated on X by writing, “And rightly so it’s a fucking classic and I sound BIBLICAL on it.”
When asked about the reason for the increase in recent streams, Noel told TalkSPORT, “Do you know what, I thought it was a great moment, I couldn’t actually believe what I was saying. Like I said to the people from The Sun, that song belongs to the people.”
“I’m staggered that Jude Bellingham knows the lyrics, but it’s one of those songs,” he added, in reference to footage of the Real Madrid star belting out the song in Texas.
On a personal note, Gallagher said of the possibility of the scenes happening again if England win the final next month, which he will be attending, adding, “If England get to the final… my two lads, they’re England fans, my two lads, they’ll be there, and I was like, ‘It will be just your luck, you jammy little sods. City winning four in a throw and a Champions League and you see England win a World Cup final in New York while they are singing your dad’s song. Like their life isn’t good enough already.”
Meanwhile, England captain Harry Kane has described the sing-along with fans as “one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt, especially at a major tournament.”
