Mick Jagger rules out retirement: “I’ve got a lot more songs to write”

The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger may turn 83 later this month, but he has confirmed there is no plans to retire anytime soon.

On July 10th, The Stones returned in style on their new album, Foreign Tongues. However, Jagger doesn’t foresee it to be his final record and wants to continue for as long as possible.

Speaking to E Talk in a new interview, Jagger stated, “Well, I mean, I feel like I’ve got a lot more songs to write, and a lot more shows to do. That’s what I think.”

He continued, “I don’t have a retirement plan. I don’t know if anyone else does, but I don’t.”

This news won’t go down well with John Lydon, who urged The Stones to call it a day last year, stating on Good Morning Britain, “I just sat back and retired, that’s not me. I’m not that kind of person. By all means, The Rolling Stones should retire, I’m not short of a song idea or two, so there’s a difference.”

It comes after Jagger recently reaffirmed his ambitions to tour again with The Stones despite them not having any dates lined up for 2026.

It was previously speculated that they were due to hit the road for a European tour this summer, which was reportedly axed due to Keith Richards not wanting to tour.

Jagger told La Nación earlier this month, “I’d love to tour this album, I can’t wait to sing (it). There’s so many songs on this album we can do on stage, so, I don’t think we’ll be touring this year, but I hope to tour next year, and I hope to do it as soon as possible.

However, the idea of residencies, which could be more suitable logistically, are not particularly of interest to Jagger, who added, “I don’t know, I’m very ambivalent about residencies personally because it makes it very expensive for people to come to residencies, it costs twice as much.”

Nevertheless, he accepted they are “better than nothing,” suggesting that he’d potentially agree to the possibility if it were a last resort, before adding, “I’m very comfortable moving around, personally. I like to go places.”

For now, nothing has been announced, but Jagger’s latest comments indicate that when The Stones do confirm a new batch of dates, it won’t be a farewell lap.
