Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial’ finds new home after Amazon drops OpenAI feature

Luca Guadagnino‘s upcoming movie, Artificial, has finally found a new home after it was dropped by Amazon.

The film stars Andrew Garfield as the controversial OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and explores the bizarre time when he was shockingly fired from his own company in November 2023 before being reinstated within just five days.

In a statement, Amazon MGM Studios explained why it had chosen against distributing the movie, “We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker – not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue.”

The statement concluded, “We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”

Notably, earlier this year, Amazon announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI, while Amazon chief Jeff Bezos is also a leading advocate for developing AI technology.

It was then reported that major distributors such as Netflix, A24, and Focus Features also declined to take on Artificial, which left the film in a state of quandary.

However, Neon, the distributor behind the Oscar-winning Anora, has now stepped in and closed a deal to acquire the movie for around $40 million, according to Variety.

With a new distributor secured, Artificial is now on the road to be viewed by the wider public, which reportedly won’t make for pleasant viewing for Elon Musk or Altman, who are claimed not to be presented in the most glowing light.

Artificial’s cast also features Mark Rylance, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Billie Lourd, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Cooper Hoffman and Ike Barinholtz, who portrays Musk.

Meanwhile, Damon Albarn previously confirmed that he has created the score for the Guadagnino feature.
