Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial’ dropped by Amazon following OpenAI partnership
Luca Guadagnino has suffered a surprising blow after his movie, Artificial, which charts the rise of AI, has been dropped by Amazon MGM Studios following a new OpenAI partnership at Amazon.
The film stars Andrew Garfield as the controversial OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who was shockingly fired in November 2023 before being reinstated within just five days.
Artificial, which was announced last year and has almost finished filming, boasts a stacked ensemble including Mark Rylance, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Billie Lourd, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Cooper Hoffman and Ike Barinholtz.
Additionally, earlier this year, Damon Albarn confirmed that he will be behind the score for the new ChatGPT big deep-dive.
In a statement sent to Deadline, the studio announced the surprising move, sharing: “We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker – not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue.”
The statement concluded, “We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”
This might not be so surprising for those keeping a firm eye on Amazon’s partnerships. Earlier this year, Amazon announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI, while Amazon head Jeff Bezos is one of the leading advocates for developing AI technology.
Last week, Bezos shared that he believes the technology would create, not steal, human jobs: “I know there’s a lot of concern that many people have, including many smart people, that AI is going to make humans redundant and so on,” he began.
“I totally disagree with this point of view. And I think, in fact, AI is going to create a labour shortage,” Bezos stressed. It is not yet clear which studio will pick up the next film from the Challengers director.
