Damon Albarn confirmed to be scoring Luca Guadagnino’s movie about OpenAI

Damon Albarn has confirmed that he is set to score a new movie about AI from director Luca Guadagnino.

The frontman announced the news in a recent interview with The Needle Drop, revealing that he is creating the soundtrack for the movie Artificial, which is based on the makers of ChatGPT.

“I’ve been quite involved with AI because I’ve been making a score for a movie called Artificial at the moment, which is all about the founders of ChatGPT,” Albarn said, before going on to talk about how AI “can’t replace” real human art.

“I’ve had a lot of time to think about it. Music and art should not be easy. Once it becomes easy, it’s meaningless,” he continued. “In a way, it’s the things you don’t see or hear that make it art. It’s a weird intuition that the listener has that picks up on the journey that the artist has been through to make that particular thing with the tone of the voice, etc. You can’t replace that.”

Albarn added: “I think there was a foolish moment where the big corporations thought AI was going to make their life easier and more money. And well, that is not the case. It’s just going to… I don’t think it’s possible for AI to make soulful music.”

The Gorillaz frontman previously alluded to his involvement in the film last month, telling Uncut that he is “singing some songs and writing some electronic and orchestral backing.”

Artificial, which stars Andrew Garfield as the OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the chaotic five-day period in 2023 when he was fired and rehired to the company, was shot between July and October last year.

Its supporting cast includes the likes of Monica Barbaro, Cooper Koch, Jason Schwartzman, and Chris O’Dowd.

It comes as Albarn has recently released the latest Gorillaz album The Mountain last week, subsequently announcing that the band are set to head to North America for a 22-date tour later this year.

Further details on the release of Artificial are yet to be revealed publicly.
