Colman Domingo pokes fun at Elon Musk’s AI-generated ‘The Odyssey’: “Whiter than Christmas
It’s safe to say Colman Domingo won’t be sitting down to watch the AI-generated version of The Odyssey that Elon Musk has vowed to make.
It still appears unclear whether Musk has seen Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, which is dominating the box office around the world, but that hasn’t stopped him hammering it on social media in recent months.
His series of posts on X includes saying that “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity” for casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy in the ancient story. The South African native also claimed, “Chris Nolan is an anti-White racist.”
Furthermore, he said the cast of Elliott Page as Achilles was “one of the dumbest and twisted things I’ve ever heard”.
Now, this week, Musk has gone a step further. “Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” he posted on X, alongside an AI-generated three-minute short of The Odyssey, posted by another X user.
Another user also asked Musk to give Mel Gibson $100 million to produce a version of The Odyssey which features historically accurate ships, weapons and armour, to which Musk replied, “I’m down.”
Unsurprisingly, Musk’s comments were ripe for a late-night ribbing courtesy of Domingo, who is sitting in as host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week.
During his opening monologue, Domingo said, “Now Elon Musk is planning to create what he calls a ‘historically accurate’ version of The Odyssey, using his Grok AI. And by ‘historically accurate’, he means whiter than Christmas at Cracker Barrel.”
Domingo continued, “Of course, this is all because Elon and his Musketeers are upset over the diversity casting of The Odyssey. And I don’t want to get technical here, but you can’t make a historically accurate version of something that is totally made the fuck up.”
He then gave some sage words of wisdom to Musk, adding, “I mean, The Odyssey is fiction. You know, like The Hunger Games, or the president’s cognitive exams. I mean come on, doesn’t Elon Musk have better things to do? Wasn’t this bitch supposed to be on Mars by now.”
While Musk isn’t a fan, The Odyssey is currently on track to become the biggest film of 2026, generating $264 million in sales during its opening weekend across the globe.
In a five-star review, Far Out wrote of Nolan’s latest picture, “The Odyssey is the film event of the year because it realises Nolan’s ambition of making cinema that needs to be experienced, and not just consumed. This is a story that can’t exactly be ‘spoiled’, but the visualisation, thematic analysis, and emotional calculations inherent to the filmmaker’s interpretation justify another retelling.”
