Cannes 2025: Juliette Binoche announced as jury president
French actor Juliette Binoche has been announced as the next Jury President at the upcoming 78th Cannes Film Festival, taking over from Greta Gerwig in the role. It will be the second time that the jury has been led by a woman for two consecutive years.
Binoche is one of the most celebrated performers of her generation. She has created an international career through her work with auteurs such as Michael Haneke, David Cronenberg, Abbas Kiarostami, Olivier Assayas, Claire Denis, Louis Malle, and Hou Hsien.
Her work has been met with critical acclaim, with an Academy Award for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ after her performance in The English Patient in 1997, as well as an award for ‘Best Actress’ at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010, which came after her performance in Certified Copy.
Binoche described her role as Cannes Jury President by saying she’s “looking forward to sharing these life experiences with the members of the jury and the public. In 1985, I walked up the steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress; I never imagined I’d return 40 years later in the honorary role of President of the Jury,” adding that she “appreciates the privilege, the responsibility and the absolute need for humility.”
The actor has described how she was “born at the Cannes Film Festival” following her performance in André Téchiné’s Rendez-vous, her first major film role, which premiered at Cannes in 1985. Her 2023 film The Taste of Things was the last of hers to premiere at Cannes, and it earned Trần Anh Hùng the “Best Director” award.
Binoche was also elected president of the European Film Academy, while also using her voice to express concerns over political issues relating to education, immigration and human rights in Iran.
Cannes Film Festival is set to commence on May 13th, 2025, and conclude on May 25th, 2025.
