Brits 2026: Liam Gallagher says Noel is Britain’s “greatest songwriter” since John Lennon and Paul McCartney following victory

Liam Gallagher has celebrated his Oasis bandmate and brother, Noel Gallagher, after he won ‘Songwriter of the Year’ at the Brit Awards.

The ceremony took place at the Co-op Live in Manchester on February 28th and Noel, who has not released any music since 2024, was celebrated in his home city with the coveted award.

Noel used his speech to pay thanks to his Oasis bandmates, including those no longer in the band, who made his lyrics become songs, stating, “I’m going to start by saying, I’ve got to thank my brother. Bonehead, Guigsy, Tony McCarroll, Alan White, Gem, and Andy. They brought those songs to life.”

He powerfully continued, “Without them, I’d just be a singer-songwriter, and no one gives a shit about singer-songwriters.”

Noel then thanked Oasis fans, adding, “But more importantly I’d like to thank you, the people who have kept our songs alive for the last 34 years. You’ve given us the most extraordinary life. Thank you very much for that.”

As it was at the Co-op Live, which is on the doorstep of Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, Noel finished his speech by saying, “Have a great night. Up the fucking blues.” His final line was notably censored during ITV’s broadcast.

Following Noel’s victory, his brother Liam, who wasn’t in attendance despite his children heading to Manchester to support their uncle, took to X to praise the ‘Songwriter of the Year’, writing, “All hail the greatest songwriter this country has ever seen since Lennon n McCartney ps my name is liam x”.

Prior to the ceremony, Noel addressed the elephant in the room surrounding him winning ‘Songwriter of the Year’, admitting on TalkSPORT, “If I’m being honest right, I just think they were desperate to get somebody from Oasis up there because it’s from Manchester… that’s what I think.”

Nevertheless, he was happy to accept the award, adding, “If any of those wet wipes songwriting teams, all 11 of them, want to write a song between the lot of them, want to have it out on the red carpet, I’m there.”
