Which screenwriter has written the most movies in history?

The work of the writer is arguably the most important aspect of any film. Countless directors have sung the praises of the screenwriters they work with, discussing how anyone can make a good film with two key elements – a good script and good actors. While some filmmakers have built reputations on both directing and writing their films, some prefer to adapt the work of other people or are self-professedly terrible at writing, with David Fincher, Luca Guadagnino and Denis Villeneuve becoming known for their mastery of the visual language instead of putting words onto the page.

In recent years, we have seen legendary screenwriters like Aaron Sorkin and Greta Gerwig pen masterpieces such as The Social Network, Frances Ha and A Few Good Men, with iconic lines of dialogue permeating the public sphere as people reference their lyricism and cutting insults in everyday life. From the witty one-liners in Frances Ha to the Prada flip-flop monologue in The Social Network, their phrases have entered our collective vocabulary because they came from some of the most talented writers of all time.

However, writers are famously rather reclusive and mysterious about their work, sometimes spending years on one project and then recoiling from the world while they find their next idea. Being a writer can be a huge test of patience, becoming lost in a story for years while you figure out the best way to share it.

Because of this, some writers have found success through one incredible screenplay or novel and then ceased writing forever, completely drained by the creative process and needing a permanent retirement to recover, while others persevere and pen multiple projects. But which screenwriter has written the most movies?

Safa Önal was one of the busiest screenwriters in the film industry and currently holds the world record for coining the most screenplays. Born in Istanbul, Önal wrote the screenplay for films like Violet Eyes and Hicran Sokagi, but over the course of his life wrote 395 filmed screenplays.

The writer claimed that this was purely out of necessity, being one of the few screenwriters in Turkey who was familiar both with the people/culture and with a level of literacy that allowed him to create fluid dialogue. His work was defined by an introspective quality and ability to understand the inner psyche of the people he wrote about, often described as making films that were ahead of their time.

Who has the most Oscars for screenwriting?

While Önal has certainly written the most screenplays, he was never given an Academy Award, and someone else is the most critically decorated screenwriter. While Woody Allen is notorious for his directorial work, he is equally as famous for his written work and his unique style of dialogue. His characters usually talk rapidly, with a somewhat neurotic quality as they muse on the meaning of life, love and their various interpersonal quandaries (often performed by Allen himself).

Over the years, Allen has been awarded three Academy Awards for ‘Best Original Screenplay’, winning for Annie Hall, Hannah and her Sisters and Midnight in Paris. Overall, he has been nominated for 16 Oscars for his screenplays, making him one of the most prolific screenwriters of all time.
