Watch My Chemical Romance bring out Billy Corgan for ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings’
Emo legends My Chemical Romance had a surprise for fans at their Chicago concert as they brought out Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan.
After playing 24 songs, opening with ‘The End.’ and ‘Dead!’ and closing with ‘Boy Division’ and ‘Helena’, frontman Gerard Way addressed the crowd earnestly. He first referenced the Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness tour: “We saw that and was like, ‘We would love to do this, it would be real fucking amazing.’”
He added, “It’s the pandemic right, and I’m super sad about it. And I come across this video, it’s late night and I’m sitting alone… I’m scrolling through Instagram and I see this fucking kid in his room playing along to ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’… I’m watching this thing and I felt the blade of Christ enter my chest, it was wild. I never felt anything like that in my life.”
The musicians then soared through the collaboration on the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness hit, ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings’. When performing the track previously, Way had branded it “the ultimate rock defiance,” as it is “like searing an imprint on the universe in pure fucking defiance. It is the best rock n’ roll song ever fucking made.”
The ‘Teenagers’ stars originally kicked off their Long Live The Black Parade tour in July, opening in Seattle and hitting cities such as Los Angeles, Toronto, and San Francisco.
Far Out writer Tim Coffman attended their recent performance in Philadelphia and gave it a triumphant five stars. He wrote, “Whenever Way looked out at his loyal subjects, he didn’t look with disdain by any stretch. His is the face of someone who knows that he was part of something bigger than himself, and seeing the looks on everyone’s faces, My Chemical Romance has created its own little family whose bond will never be broken.”
