Watch Ana de Armas star in new trailer for John Wick spin-off ‘Ballerina’
The new trailer for the upcoming John Wick spin-off, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, has arrived ahead of the film’s release later this year.
Scheduled for release on June 6th, 2025, the official synopsis from Lionsgate reads: “Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma.”
Macarro is a character that is already familiar to fans of the franchise after she was introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. However, Macarro was initially played by Unity Phelan rather than de Armas, who will star in the new motion picture.
Phelan has only appeared in two acting roles, which saw her portray a ballet dancer in both motion pictures due to it being her profession; hence, de Armas was brought in to play Macarro.
The new movie is set between John Wick 3 and John Wick 4 which allows Keanu Reeves to return as Wick in Ballerina despite the conclusive ending of the last film in the series.
The film’s star, de Armas, previously said of her character to Collider in December: “I think there are some trademarks in the style of the fights in John Wick, and things that he does that are very particular to him. But because in this movie we’re seeing through Eve’s eyes the background of that training that John had, and how these assassins and ballerinas, how these people become these assassins, there are some little details that are the same, but Eve Macarro is Eve Macarro. She’s not John Wick.”
Ballerina marks the second John Wick spin-off to hit screens following The Continental, starring Mel Gibson, which streamed on Peacock in 2023.
Reeves has denied speculation that he’ll return as Wick in the future. However, during a recent interview with ComicBook, Lionsgate EVP, Jenefer Brown, confirmed a fifth movie is in the works, “Up next, of course, is Ballerina, which is our first spin-off movie and [we] can’t wait for that to release to the world. Of course, we’ve announced we’re working on a fifth John Wick film.”
Brown continued: “I think there are more spinoffs to come, a TV series, video game. We’ve shared that we’re developing a fifth John Wick film. (John Wick) may be (dead). We are all on bated breath waiting to find out.”
