‘John Wick 5’ in development despite denial by Keanu Reeves

According to an executive at Lionsgate, John Wick 5 is still in development despite Keanu Reeves‘ recent comments denying a return to the franchise.

Significantly, at the climax of that 2023 blockbuster, the iconic character won his freedom from the villainous High Table organisation but seemingly lost his life in the process. The final scene showed Wick’s old friend and mentor, Winston, at his grave, situated next to that of his beloved wife.

Due to the definitive ending of the movie, Reeves stated that a fifth John Wick movie would be impossible to produce.

Last week, Reeves told Extra, “You know, the character’s dead. He died in John Wick: Chapter 4. I know, in Hollywood you can…I know, I know, it’s the Hollywood story. Right now, there isn’t [any plans for a return].”

While Reeves shot down the chances of the beloved character returning for another feature, this is seemingly not the case.

During a recent interview with ComicBook, Lionsgate EVP, Jenefer Brown, shared, “Up next, of course, is Ballerina, which is our first spin-off movie and [we] can’t wait for that to release to the world. Of course, we’ve announced we’re working on a fifth John Wick film.”

Brown continued: “I think there are more spinoffs to come, a TV series, video game. We’ve shared that we’re developing a fifth John Wick film. (John Wick) may be (dead). We are all on bated breath waiting to find out.”

Apart from confirming that another John Wick movie remains in development, Brown refrained from offering any further information regarding the film and a possible release date.

The upcoming spin-off movie, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, is set for release on June 6th, 2025.

The official synopsis from Lionsgate reads: “Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma.”
