Tom Holland reveals first film after ‘The Odyssey’ will be a Fred Astaire biopic
Tom Holland might be one of the central figures in Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, but he’s already planning ahead for his next adventure.
Holland, who is currently promoting both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has revealed that his next project will be a biopic of Fred Astaire; crucially, the Spider-Man star will be doing all the dancing himself.
During a new interview with Good Morning America, Holland revealed excitedly, “As soon as I finish these tours I’m diving back into the dance studio”.
Astaire was an iconic American singer, dancer and actor, with a legendary career spanning 76 years during which he became one of the biggest stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, with classics like Top Hat and Holiday Inn under his belt.
The new biopic, which is currently in pre-production, will be directed by Paddington and Wonka filmmaker Paul King.
Holland confessed, “I did my first few rehearsals recently, and it both filled me with excitement and absolute dread because I’ve got so much work to do to try and do Fred proud.”
This is an important role for the British star, who got his big break as the lead in the Billy Elliot stage show.
“I have a desire to use no doubles,” Holland said. “To do all of the dancing, to shoot those dances in one shot – how [Astaire] would have done it.”
Notably, Holland’s partner, Zendaya, will also be undertaking her own biopic, taking on the likeness of the rock and roll star Ronnie Spector, who gave The Drama star her well wishes on the project before her death in 2022.
Holland’s recent inclusion in Nolan’s latest IMAX epic has been garnering rave reviews, and looks set to smash plenty of box office records.
Far Out gave The Odyssey a glowing five-star review, observing, “The Odyssey is the film event of the year because it realises Nolan’s ambition of making cinema that needs to be experienced, and not just consumed.”
