Tom Cruise appears in first footage of ‘Mission: Impossible 8’
After nearly three decades, it seems as though the Mission: Impossible movie franchise is finally coming to an end. Its eighth instalment, The Final Reckoning, is scheduled to be released May 23rd, 2025, with starring actor Tom Cruise recently unveiling the poster, film title, and its first trailer.
The 62-year-old actor shared the trailer and the caption, “Every choice has led to this.” This suggests that part eight of the franchise would wrap up many of the loose ends of earlier films. Initially intended to be a ‘part two’ to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, The Final Reckoning has suffered numerous delays and set-backs in production, most notably as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the SAG-AFTRA writers and actors strike last year.
The new film features some familiar faces from previous instalments. Its cast includes Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and many more. A few new characters will also be introduced, including—but not limited to—those played by Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Katy O’Brian, and Nick Offerman.
The newly released trailer for The Final Reckoning gives the impression of an expectedly action-packed finale to the beloved series. In the space of only a few minutes, Cruise is shown dangling from a biplane, crashing cars, exploring a submarine wreckage and, of course, sprinting through various different settings.
Although the first trailer does not reveal much about the plot, particularly since it is similar to most other action film trailers in content, there are a few details that will be exciting for fans. Namely, Angela Bassett, who first appeared in Mission: Impossible—Fallout back in 2018, is revealed as being back as CIA Director Erika Sloane.
Looking at the trailer, it seems the film will also heavily feature the golden key, a focal point of Dead Reckoning. In that instalment, Cruise and company were tasked with finding the key, as it would aid them in stopping the evil AI ‘Entity’. The key features prominently in the trailer and is seen set in a block of ice at one point.
Although everything, thus far, is pointing towards The Final Reckoning being a farewell to the franchise, both Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have repeatedly said that they would like to carry the series on indefinitely. Mission: Impossible star Simon Pegg, speaking to Far Out earlier this year, confirmed, “[Tom Cruise] shows no sign of stopping. The minute he can’t do what he wants to do, he’ll stop,” while also clarifying, “He’ll never want to short-change his audience.”
