New ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie delayed until 2025 due to strikes
The newest entry into the Mission: Impossible series, starring Tom Cruise, has been delayed from 2024 to 2025 due to ongoing strike action.
The upcoming film currently remains untitled and will mark the eighth Mission: Impossible movie in the franchise. Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt for the final time, supported by a returning cast featuring Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Vanessa Kirby.
The movie began shooting in the spring of 2022, but filming was paused in July 2023 due to SAG-AFTRA strike action.
Paramount initially planned to release the spy sequel on August 5th, 2022, but it has since been postponed several times. It was most recently rescheduled for June 28th, 2024, but the movie has now been pushed back by almost a year to May 23rd, 2025.
The SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14th, 2023, due to concerns surrounding the increasing use of AI in cinema and unfair streaming residuals. Conversations with Hollywood studios have been ongoing since then, with negotiations resuming on October 24th.
Cruise is one of many actors who has spoken about his concerns regarding artificial intelligence. He spoke up about the issue in a Zoom negotiating session and reportedly asked the union to give actors permission to promote their work throughout the strike.
