Thurston Moore rules out Sonic Youth reunion: “It certainly doesn’t feel unfinished”

Former Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore has shut down talk of possibly reuniting with the iconic indie band.

While the biggest music story of 2025 is the Oasis reunion, which will bring the iconic British band back together for the first time in more than 15 years for a huge run of stadium shows across the globe, it seems a Sonic Youth reunion remains an impossible scenario.

The New York legends, which also featured Moore’s ex-wife Kim Gordon, guitarist Lee Ranaldo and drummer Steve Shelley, parted in 2011 after 30 years of being together. Their musical disbandment came following the breakdown of Moore’s marriage to Gordon, following 27 years of their romantic partnership.

In recent years, both Gordon and Moore have focused on their respective solo careers, with a reunion appearing unlikely, especially considering the circumstances surrounding their divorce.

Now, in an interview with Billboard, Moore has seemingly closed the door for good on a potential reunion, stating, “We covered so much territory that I don’t feel like it was a story left on untold. I think it really had a nice trajectory, and it certainly doesn’t feel unfinished to me.”

The last time Moore addressed the group’s potential comeback in 2023, he was similarly pessimistic about the chances of it occurring. Speaking to the New York Times, he said they are “a really typical and expected thing to do… that goes against the nature of what the band was. I’d rather be like the Beatles and never get back together.”

However, on a more positive note, Moore also claimed that reuniting Sonic Youth could “be really worthwhile” and “something that’s always going to be on the table.”

He also said his relationship with Gordon wouldn’t be an issue, adding, “We’re adults. We can find our peace in this kind of situation. We’re very connected in our family with my daughter and my nieces and everything. It’s not like some hate-fest or anything.”
