The Smashing Pumpkins have finally reunited with Butch Vig

After more than 30 years, The Smashing Pumpkins have finally reunited with producer Butch Vig.

Vig’s history with the band dates back to the start of their career, when he produced their seminal first two albums, 1991’s Gish and 1993’s Siamese Dream.

Now, 33 years on from the last time they teamed up, Billy Corgan has confirmed that there is a new track in the offing from The Smashing Pumpkins that Vig has produced.

During a live broadcast on Substack, Corgan let slip, “We’ve just recorded one song. It’s for a specific purpose, which I can’t give that part out.”

However, the track is yet to be the finished article, with Corgan admitting, “I haven’t come up with a title yet, honestly. The plan is the song will be released this year. I can’t say exactly when. There’s reasons for that.”

He added, “The song is really cool. It’s basically done recording. I’d say there’s a couple little things left. I’d say it’s 98 per cent done.”

Vig has always been incredibly proud of the work he previously did with The Smashing Pumpkins during the 1990s.

During an exclusive interview with Far Out in 2021, the Nevermind producer named Siamese Dream as the one record that he’s most proud of from his production career.

“I have to say Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream. I’m very proud of because that was a really difficult record,” the Garbage drummer divulged.

He explained, “It was before Pro Tools, Billy and I set the bar really high in terms of how sonically we wanted it to sound. I had to deal with all of the dysfunctionality of them as four people together, but I think the record still sounds really good. It has a sound to it that we kind of came up within the studio, and to me, it still sounds as powerful now as it did when I recorded it.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week, The Smashing Pumpkins confirmed details of a new North American tour, which will keep them occupied this autumn and winter.

The run of 27 shows is set to begin on September 30th at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, before travelling to stops such as Chicago, Nashville, and Las Vegas, and will conclude on November 12th at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
