‘Rats in a Cage’: The Smashing Pumpkins announce new North American tour
The Smashing Pumpkins have announced that they are set to head on tour across North America later this year, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of one of their iconic albums.
The band are heading out on The Rats in a Cage tour from the end of September, honouring their seminal 1995 album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
However, on top of playing the entire double album in full, the show will consist of two sets, the latter of which will consist of a setlist “from nearly four decades of unruly hits and dark treasures,” according to the press release.
The run of 27 shows is set to begin on September 30th at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, before travelling to stops such as Chicago, Nashville, and Las Vegas, and concluding on November 12th at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
It comes as frontman Billy Corgan recently announced his own separate solo tour in celebration of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness, where he will travel across the UK and Europe this September, giving an orchestral and operatic reimagining of the album.
The A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness show has already had a successful run in Chicago, but will now head across the pond for seven shows stretching over London, Paris, Antwerp, and Madrid.
It is clearly a time of busy touring horizons for Corgan, as he will not have long after returning from his European dates to get back in tune with the rest of his band and head out on the road in the US for an almost two-month stint.
The 1995 double album has always been one that the frontman has considered among his masterstrokes, as at the time of its release, he told The Chicago Tribune that the record was an attempt “To sum up all the things I felt as a youth but was never able to voice articulately,”
“I’m waving goodbye to me in the rear view mirror, tying a knot around my youth and putting it under the bed,” he added, hence making the 30th anniversary return even more momentous.
Various presales for The Rats in a Cage tour will begin on May 19th and 20th from 10am local time, while general sale will be made available from May 21st at 10am local time.
