“That was a disaster”: the movie Alexandra Daddario loathed every second of making
Alexandra Daddario feels that she hasn’t been treated fairly as an actor.
Judging the career of an actor can be challenging because there’s only so much that they can do when they’re working on a bad script, and most actors don’t have the freedom to turn down any potentially low-quality project that comes their way.
Acting is a profession as much as it is an art form, and not every star has the opportunity to be picky, which has been the case for Daddario, who has been sharply accused for her body of work, as a vast majority of her films have gotten negative reviews.
She got her breakout role in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, a film that was reviled by fans of the novel for how far it swayed from the material, and although it was clearly intended to be the next major young adult franchise in the vein of Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, only one sequel was made with Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Sea of Monsters, which was such a box office disappointment that it destroyed the franchise.
Daddario has shown some promise in her work on HBO shows, as she had an acclaimed role in the first season of True Detective, and received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her performance in the first season of The White Lotus. Nonetheless, her big screen track record has only gotten worse, with films like Baywatch, Texas Chainsaw 3D, Burying the Ex, and Songbird all being hated.
However, Daddario defended her choices and has stated that being in independent films is much harder than it might seem for someone who doesn’t have experience in the industry.
“I have a lot of acting gigs I regret doing,” she admitted, “With all due respect to everyone who worked hard and who I worked with, there was an independent film that I shot that was a disaster. A lot of infighting, producers walking off set, just chaos. I don’t want to say the name, though, because you can’t, but I hated working on that. The movie doesn’t have to be good, but you know, fighting is not something that I’m into.”
Daddario is wise enough not to name the film in question, which could potentially burn bridges with any of her collaborators, but it’s not an easy title to identify. When looking at her filmography, she’s appeared in a number of smaller films that might fit the description that she gave. Since many of these films go under the radar, any of the on-set controversies tend to disappear, as they simply don’t get much attention.
The tough reality is that the only way for Daddario to truly silence her critics would be to be in a genuinely great movie or show, but that could be a challenge for her, given how much criticism her previous work has received. Although she now has a consistent gig on the AMC horror show Mayfair Witches, it hasn’t received the sort of breakout acclaim earned by other shows on the same network, such as Interview with the Vampire and Dark Winds. Her next film project is the biopic Hershey, which was mocked heavily online when its first trailer debuted, so it doesn’t look too promising out there for her yet.
