The Killers scrapped synth album because it didn’t feel “authentic”
After two decades of hit-making and world-touring, The Killers have released their new compilation album, Rebel Diamonds, which collates all of their best tracks from the various albums they have released in their time as a band.
The trajectory of The Killers has only ever been up, with each album thriving despite apparent changes in tone and approach. Their recent tour is one of the biggest yet, as they pack out stadiums worldwide. Their debut album, Hot Fuss, skyrocketed the band to fame, and after that, with preceding albums such as Sam’s Town and Day & Age having tracks like ‘When You Were Young’ and ‘Human’ on there, things went from great to greater.
The Killers have never stopped releasing music despite their early success and ability to ride those classics if they wanted to. Their most recent album, Pressure Machine, ushered in a new age for the band, one a bit more concept but equally enjoyable.
Recently, the band confessed to struggles when putting together a new album, so much so that they have decided to forget the project. In August this year, they released a new synth-heavy single, ‘Your Side of Town’, which was to be featured on the new album.
However, it has since been scrapped as Flowers didn’t have enthusiasm for the project, opting instead to return to the stripped-back acoustic style on Pressure Machine.
In a new interview, the singer said: “It just didn’t feel authentic. It felt like we were forcing something. We love synth music, it’s a part of our DNA and there’s been great contributions from us in that genre. And man, we love New Order and Depeche Mode, so it’s not a slight. It just doesn’t feel right for us at the moment.”
The change of pace means there likely won’t be any new Killers music for some time, but when it does come, fans can be assured that it will be them as their most authentic selves.
