How a fake murder story buried alt-metal’s finest songs for a decade
A nightmare.

Slipknot are an American heavy metal band formed in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995.
Renowned for their aggressive sound, masked identities and chaotic live performances, the group helped bring extreme metal into the mainstream during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Combining elements of nu metal, alternative metal, groove metal and extreme metal, Slipknot achieved international success with albums such as ‘Slipknot’, ‘Iowa’, ‘Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses)’ and ‘We Are Not Your Kind’.
Led by vocalist Corey Taylor and percussionist Shawn Crahan, the band has become one of the most influential metal acts of the modern era. Their uncompromising approach, theatrical image and devoted fanbase have cemented Slipknot’s place among heavy music’s most important bands.
