His father, Thomas Brosnan, left the family when Pierce was an infant, and he was brought up by his mother, May Smith, along with relatives. Brosnan was first married to actor Cassandra Harris until her death in 1991. He married journalist and environmental activist Keely Shaye Smith in 2001, and together they have two sons.
