Gary Numan is an English singer-songwriter, musician and producer widely regarded as a pioneer of electronic and synth-pop music. After emerging as the frontman of Tubeway Army, he achieved major success with the UK No. 1 single ‘Are “Friends” Electric?’ and the album Replicas.
His first solo album, The Pleasure Principle, produced the international hit ‘Cars’ and established his futuristic synthesisers, stark vocals and android-like image as defining features of early electronic pop. Numan later reinvented his sound through darker industrial rock on albums including Exile, Pure, Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind), Savage (Songs from a Broken World) and Intruder.
His work has influenced artists across synth-pop, industrial music, alternative rock and electronic music.
