‘The Kids from Yesterday’: My Chemical Romance and the art of emo nostalgia in 2026
The ultimate modern-day catharsis.
Emo is a rock subgenre that emerged from the Washington, D.C. hardcore punk scene during the mid-1980s before evolving into one of alternative music’s most influential movements.
Originally short for “emotional hardcore”, emo combined the intensity of punk with deeply personal lyrics, melodic guitar work and introspective songwriting. The genre developed through pioneering bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace before expanding during the 1990s with acts including Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, American Football and The Promise Ring. By the 2000s, emo had entered the mainstream through artists such as Jimmy Eat World, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday and Paramore.
Despite its evolution across multiple waves, emo remains defined by its emotional honesty, melodic sensibility and lasting influence on alternative rock, pop punk and modern indie music.
The ultimate modern-day catharsis.
