“Machine music”: the 1975 Brian Eno song that could be infinitely long
A staggering undertaking.
Ambient music is a genre that emphasises atmosphere, texture and tone over traditional song structures, melodies or rhythms. Popularised by Brian Eno during the 1970s, the genre was conceived as music capable of being both actively listened to and unobtrusively experienced as part of an environment.
Drawing on influences from electronic music, minimalism, avant-garde composition and experimental sound design, ambient music often incorporates synthesisers, field recordings and slowly evolving sonic landscapes.
Since its emergence, the genre has expanded into numerous subgenres, including dark ambient, ambient techno and space ambient, influencing artists across electronic, post-rock, film scoring and contemporary classical music. Today, ambient music remains valued for its immersive qualities and its ability to evoke reflection, relaxation and emotional depth.
Getting an overdue reassessment with younger listeners.
An endlessly innovative effort…
